Urgent dental care and a clear next step

Contact us about toothache, a broken or loose tooth, swelling, a dental injury or damaged dental work. An assessment is needed even if an injury does not hurt.

Your dentist will assess the problem, explain any recommended imaging and discuss treatment options and costs. An urgent visit may focus on the immediate issue, with further appointments needed to complete treatment. Tell us about medication, allergies and relevant medical conditions when you call.

The guidance below can help you take the next step. It does not replace an urgent assessment. Call the practice for advice about your situation.

What to do while arranging care

Children’s dental injuries

Never put a knocked-out baby tooth back into its socket. Arrange urgent dental assessment after a tooth injury. If your child has difficulty breathing or swallowing, heavy bleeding or serious facial swelling, seek emergency medical care.

Toothache or swelling

Contact us promptly for assessment. Ask a pharmacist about suitable pain relief if needed and follow the label. Do not stop prescribed medicines or delay care because pain temporarily improves.

A loose or displaced tooth

A tooth that has moved after an injury needs urgent assessment. Avoid chewing on it and contact a dentist immediately. Do not wait for a routine appointment.

A knocked-out adult tooth

Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root. If dirty, rinse it gently in milk or saline without scrubbing. If it can be gently put back into its socket, do so; otherwise keep it in milk. Seek a dentist or emergency department immediately. Do not let it dry out.

A chipped or cracked tooth

Call for an assessment and avoid chewing on the affected side. Keep any broken tooth fragment in milk and bring it with you. The repair needed depends on the extent of the damage.

A damaged crown, veneer or filling

Keep any pieces and bring them to your appointment. Do not use household glue. Your dentist will check whether the restoration can be repaired or needs replacement.

Suspected jaw fracture or serious injury

Go to an emergency department for a suspected broken jaw or serious facial injury. Call 000 if emergency assistance is needed.
